Share

The Ventura City Council has agreed to donate $3,500 to the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit group that will use the money to promote beach cleanup efforts and California Coastal Cleanup Awareness Week later this year.

The foundation was recently designated by the California Coastal Commission as the Ventura County coordinator for the weeklong promotion, scheduled for the last week of September.

Organizers plan to approach the cities of Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Camarillo, as well as Ventura County and the U.S. Navy, for similar donations. Ventura, which made the donation at Monday’s City Council meeting, is the first city in the county to approve the request.

The funds would be used to conduct beach walks, educational displays, a countywide beach cleanup day and other events during California Coastal Cleanup Awareness Week.

Of the $3,500 from Ventura, $1,500 is to be used for planning the weeklong promotion, $1,000 is for publicity and $1,000 is for the daylong beach cleanup effort.
