These Falcons Are Faire Game

People dressing up in costumes and playing characters from medieval times are a major part of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, but there are two performers--making their fair debut this year--that live much of their act year-round (sans the tights). Known as Lord Nels and Lady Elizabeth in the arena, Amy and Darren Zobrist make birds of prey their business in and out of costume.

The Zobrists emphasize the skill--not the kill--in their shows at the Renaissance fair. (In the past, falcons were used to hunt, and with their speed and precision, they were a popular blood sport.) Their falcons are trained at the Falconry Academy in Pasadena, which was started by Darren and his brother, with the help of their father.

“I was 10 when I saw a falconry demonstration at the San Diego Zoo,” said Darren. He hopes that, through the academy, they will not only encourage conservation of the birds, but possibly others will see the demonstrations and want to get involved, just as Darren did.
