VAN NUYS : Self-Defense Class for Women Offered

A self-defense workshop for women will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 20 at the California Women’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Dependencies, 14622 Victory Blvd., Van Nuys.

The course will be conducted by Betty Brooks, a teacher, community activist and expert in the fields of female sexuality and violence against women. Brooks will teach methods of response to crisis situations ranging from assertiveness to physical defense.

She is a certifier in the Self Defense Certification Program of the Southern California Rape Crisis Hotline Alliance and a member of the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women. The California Women’s Commission is a nonprofit organization working to improve services available to women and families at risk because of alcohol and other drug-related problems. The organization receives funding from the state and county in addition to private donations.
