Three Manual Arts High School students have been selected for $500 college scholarships by the Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles.

Julio Baldizon Jr., Aracely Gandara and Nancy Guadron were chosen because of their grades, community service and leadership abilities, said Samuel Mark of USC, one of the consortium’s founding members.

The students, picked from among seven applicants from three area high schools, were presented Monday with the Jeanne Boyle Kewell Memorial Scholarships, named for a longtime teacher and counselor with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

A South-Central elementary schoolteacher joined a Mid-City colleague in receiving the consortium’s 1995 Teacher Recognition Award. Veronica Moscoso of West Vernon Avenue School and Joe Neeb of St. Thomas the Apostle School each received a $500 award.

Mark said the teachers, among 18 nominated for the award, were chosen for their commitment and dedication to their students.

The recipients were honored Monday at Mount St. Mary’s College.
