After Hart High’s 2-1 loss to Righetti in the championship game of the Thousand Oaks softball tournament Saturday, Indian Coach Al Weil wasn’t too upset.

The Indians (18-7) hit the ball hard against Righetti freshman Jocelyn Forest, but ended up with only one hit.

“I think she’s a good pitcher,” Weil said. “She moves the ball around and has a good riseball, but we hit the ball right at people.”

Weil couldn’t be too upset with pitcher Mary Colleran either. She gave up three hits and two unearned runs.

And it was even hard for him to be angry about the errors that cost the Indians the game, because they were made by third baseman Tracy Clark and shortstop Chris Davis, two of Hart’s most dependable fielders.

“I guess if we are going to slip up it’s better to do it now than in league or in the playoffs,” Weil said.

The Warriors (21-6) scored in the bottom of the third. Forest led off with a ground ball to Clark, who threw high to first base. The ball glanced off the glove of Anna Nordhagen and bounced out of play, allowing Forest to take second.

Brandy Greenwood grounded out to shortstop, and Forest took third, narrowly beating Nordhagen’s throw from first. After a walk to Leanna Troesh, Alanna Marquez ripped a single down the third-base line, driving in Forest.

Troesh scored when Davis, making a pump fake to force Marquez back to first base, accidentally had the ball slip out of her hand.

“That was the darndest thing,” Weil said.

Colleran (17-6) gave up three hits, struck out three and walked three.

Hart did not get a hit after Clark’s single to lead off the game, but the Indians had baserunners. They broke through with a run in the sixth, when Righetti third baseman Sabrina Early made two errors.

But the rally fizzled when Davis hit a line drive that was caught by shortstop Stephanie Cain and Jennie Nordhagen hit another liner right to Greenwood, the second baseman.

Forest (14-4) retired three pinch-hitters in the seventh to end the game. Forest was named the tournament’s most outstanding pitcher and most valuable player.

Hart’s Colleran and Anna Nordhagen made the all-tournament team.
