FOUNTAIN VALLEY : City Names Projects to Get Grant Funds

The City Council has awarded nearly $1.2 million in federal grants that will pay for a variety of community projects such as improving a storm drain to prevent flooding and assisting mobile-home owners who want to fix up their dwellings.

Planning Services Manager Andrew Perea said the city will receive $469,000 in grant funds for fiscal year 1995-96. However, the city has $712,240 left over from previous years.

Among the projects earmarked for funding are:

* $25,000 for paramedic equipment to provide better service to the city’s northern area.

* $40,000 to improve the storm drain on La Terraza Avenue.

* $75,000 to make bus stops and street curb ramps accessible to the handicapped.

* Grants and loan programs to assist mobile-home owners, usually seniors on fixed incomes, in making home repairs.

The council recently also approved $70,350 for 15 agencies that serve Fountain Valley residents. Grants range from $1,500 to $9,000.

Grant recipients include Adult Day Services of Orange County, which provides therapeutic day services to seniors, $7,000; Community Services Program Inc., which provides juvenile diversion and intervention services, $8,000; Fountain Valley School District, for the after-school care program, $9,000; Huntington Beach Community Clinic, which offers affordable health care, $7,000.

Three agencies for women who are victims of domestic violence also received grant money: Interval House, $5,000; Women’s Transitional Living Center, $5,000, and YWCA South Orange County, which also serves homeless women, $6,000.
