WEST COUNTY : 2 Local Men Killed in Auto Accidents

Two Ventura County men died in separate car crashes over the weekend, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

Edward R. Lamonte, 46, of Ventura was killed Sunday after his car swerved off northbound California 33 near Sycamore Drive at 8:12 a.m.

The car hit a tree, and Lamonte, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, the CHP said. A 12-year-old passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated and released at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.

In the other accident, Luis Rosales Melendez died Saturday night after his car swerved off California 118 and down an embankment, skidding more than 100 feet upside down, the CHP said.

Melendez, 29, of Oxnard was eastbound about 11:25 p.m. at a high rate of speed just west of the Santa Clara bridge when he lost control of his vehicle. The car eventually came to a rest on its roof in a parking lot on Los Angeles Avenue.

Melendez’s passenger, Pedro Vello Montiel, 20, also of Oxnard, was treated at Ventura County Medical Center and released.
