A fire gutted the top floor of a three-story apartment building, killing four people and injuring six others who jumped from windows.

Three children, ages 2, 3 and 4, died of smoke inhalation and were found in a bedroom near the source of the Saturday fire, a fire department spokesman said.

A 40-year-old woman died when she leaped from a window. None of the others who jumped were seriously hurt.
