Chang Finishes Off Big Week by Beating Agassi

Michael Chang prevailed against the world’s No. 1 player in a demanding test on clay, beating Andre Agassi, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, Sunday to win the $328,000 AT&T; Challenge at Duluth, Ga., for the second year in a row.

It was his third victory in 11 matches against Agassi.

Spain’s Conchita Martinez, the Wimbledon champion, overwhelmed 14-year-old Martina Hingis, 6-1, 6-0, to win the Citizen Cup at Hamburg, Germany. . . . Wayne Ferreira won his second title of the year by beating good friend and occasional doubles partner Michael Stich, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), in the final of the BMW Open at Munich, Germany.

Records obtained by the FBI as part of the Baylor basketball probe are raising questions about correspondence-course credits earned by a half-dozen players at other schools, the Houston Chronicle reported. The records, concerning players at the University of Texas, Syracuse and Texas-Pan American among others, indicate the Baylor case might be part of a national scandal, the newspaper said.

Former Miami football coach Dennis Erickson withheld players’ positive drug test results from Athletic Director Paul Dee, the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale reported. Dee said he knew of one case in which he wasn’t notified of positive drug-test results. Two university sources said the case came before the 1995 Orange Bowl game, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

All-America forward Jerry Stackhouse will be leaving North Carolina for the NBA, giving up his final two years of eligibility, according to the News & Observer of Raleigh.
