SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Film buffs will feast on the new MovieViews Guide, a credit-card-sized electronic listing of info on more than 5,000 films. From Franklin Electronic Publishers, the 1.8-ounce device is due out in July.

MovieViews contains reviews of a cross-section of movies, from classics like “Citizen Kane” to “Star Wars.” It also includes Academy Award winners and movies from 1914 to this year’s Oscar winners, as well as horror films, foreign films, cult favorites and more than 50 silent films.

You can search for a review by title, cast members, director or a theme. Users can even add their own footnotes to a review to store their own critique for future reference. And there are a movie trivia quiz and MovieViews Hangman.

Wired Less: If you’re sick of the cable clutter in your home office, check out Merritt Computer Products’ Cordless Printer Sharing Kit. It uses a radio frequency transmitter and receiver to create an instant printer network free of cables and wires.

According to a Merritt representative, the kit is based on the same technology as radio-controlled cars and airplanes. A transmitter is connected to the computer and a receiver is hooked up to the printer. Once set up, the computer uses interference-free radio waves to transmit commands to the printer, which can be located up to 100 feet away.

The units are small--2.2 inches wide, 5.7 inches long and 3.8 inches high. Each kit has the ability to connect one computer to one printer and can be used with any computer or printer with a standard parallel port, including most IBM-compatible PCs. Additional units can be purchased to extend the printer network, connecting a total of 16 computers to four printers.

The Cordless Printer Sharing Kit ($239.95) comes with one transmitter, one receiver, two AC adapters and a printer cable. Additional add-on units are $119.95 each. The kit is available nationwide at CompUSA or Computer City stores or direct from Merritt in Dallas, (800) 627-7752.

Hip New Item: Pack-N-Ride is a clever child carrier that doubles as a fanny pack, and it puts the weight on your hip, not your neck or back.

Lighter than a backpack, the hip carrier is made of polypropylene fabric in blue and pink. The top of the pack is a padded platform where toddlers can sit. One strap is adjustable and fits diagonally across the chest, holding the carrier in place on the hip. The other strap is a safety harness that secures the child. The pack has two buckles and can be put on or taken off in about 10 seconds, according to Basic Comfort Inc., the Denver manufacturer.

When you remove the top of the pack, which attaches with Velcro-like strips, there is a container to store diapers, money, keys and snacks. Pack-N-Ride is designed for children up to 35 pounds.

Pack-N-Ride ($29.95) is available at Target, Venture and other retail outlets and baby-product stores nationwide. Call Basic Comfort at (800) 456-8687.
