TUSTIN : Communications Net on Council Agenda
The City Council will hear a status report today on a proposed joint-powers agreement on a countywide emergency communications network designed to enhance public safety.
Under the proposal, Orange County cities would provide the bulk of funding for an 800-megahertz radio system that would link all the police, fire and public works agencies in the county. The county would pay a smaller share than the cities under the agreement, and would have less clout on the joint-powers authority.
Progress on the $84-million radio system was stalled in December when the county filed for bankruptcy protection.
Other items on the council agenda include:
* An update on the Orange County bankruptcy.
* A report on noise abatement efforts at John Wayne Airport.
* A proposed agreement between Tustin and the Orange County Transportation Authority concerning projects funded by Measure M, a half-cent sales tax used to fund transportation projects. Among the proposed projects is a commuter rail station that would be built near the border between Tustin and North Irvine.
* A request for the city to financially support the Tustin Area Historical Society. Last year, the city contributed $5,700 to pay rent on the building where the historical society’s museum is housed.
* The appointment of Jean Lowry, Don Miller and Margarete Thompson as members of the city’s Senior Advisory Board.
The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Tustin Civic Center, 300 Centennial Way.
