Share

The Tree Society of Orange County is offering a special tour Sunday through the Tecate Cypress Ecological Reserve in Coal Canyon. As many as 25 Orange County residents can participate.

Gordon Ruser, tour guide for the tree society, said the organization has permission for only 25 people to hike through the stands of rare Tecate cypress in northern Orange County.

Participants will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Hunny’s Restaurant, at 5th and Main streets, in Corona, Riverside County. The hikers will then car-pool to Coal Canyon for the tour, which will continue through late afternoon.

Tour vehicles should have good clearance, Ruser said, as well as good tires and brakes. Hikers should take a lunch, water, clothing for varying temperatures, sunscreen, hiking footgear and, if desired, camera and binoculars. There are no bathroom facilities, he said, “so plan accordingly.”

The walk will be about five miles long and involve a 500-foot elevation change.
