City Backs the Creation of a Countywide Police Communications Link

The City Council said Monday that it will participate in a project for a new communication system for law enforcement across the county.

The 10-year-old system now in operation is strained under even normal conditions, City Manager Allan L. Roeder said. At peak hours, he said, communication among police, fire and public works officials is often delayed because the system is overloaded.

The existing network was built to accommodate a population of 1.5 million people. Orange County’s current population is estimated at more than 2.5 million.

The project, which involves the county and all Orange County cities, carries an $84-million price tag. Costa Mesa expects to pick up $2.2 million of the total, which will be shared by all the participants.
