REDONDO BEACH : Crackdown on Massage Parlors to Be Discussed

Share

City officials, residents and massage-business owners will discuss a proposal to crack down on massage parlors at a public hearing Wednesday.

The proposal was made after police investigations into Redondo Beach massage parlors that resulted in arrests for prostitution, Redondo Beach Police Capt. Jeff Cameron said.

Since the arrests, the city has been closely reviewing the sections of the Redondo Beach Municipal Code that apply to massage and acupuncture businesses. After studying similar ordinances in neighboring cities, officials have made a number of recommendations to tighten regulations.

Among the proposals is to require massage therapists to be state- or county-licensed technicians. Others include changes to lighting, business entrances, signs, linens and tables.

The city needs stricter regulations on those businesses but doesn’t want to punish businesses operating legitimately, Cameron said.

The public hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Knob Hill Community Center, 320 Knob Hill Ave.
