SAN GABRIEL VALLEY : Ousted Horcher Switches Affiliation to Democrats

Former Assemblyman Paul V. Horcher, who was recalled in a special election this week that was sparked by his decision to renounce his Republican affiliation and cast the crucial vote enabling Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) to retain his leadership post, said Thursday that he has become a Democrat.

Horcher, a Diamond Bar resident, said he re-registered as a Democrat by mail Thursday. He initially had become an independent after leaving the GOP.

He also said he has no intention of running for office again but will help his new party any way he can. “The Democrats are heading toward the mainstream and the Republicans are leaving it,” Horcher said. “The radical right has ruined the Republican Party and is out to ruin this country.”

Voters in the Assembly’s 60th District, which covers much of the San Gabriel Valley, recalled Horcher on Tuesday by nearly a 2-1 margin. They elected Republican Gary G. Miller, a Diamond Bar councilman, to serve the remainder of Horcher’s term, which expires in December, 1996.
