Share

A new grass-roots political organization based in San Fernando has received its charter from the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee.

The San Fernando Democratic Club’s all-female roster of leaders includes Olga Alarcon, mother of Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon, and three community activists who live in San Fernando.

Although based in San Fernando, the club aims to organize Democrats throughout the northeast San Fernando Valley, including Sun Valley, Sunland-Tujunga, Panorama City, Granada Hills, Pacoima, Lake View Terrace, Arleta and Sylmar.

The new club has already drawn the attention of Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Alarcon and state Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles), who showed up at a party for the club hosted by San Fernando City Councilman Raul Godinez.

“This is a grass-roots movement to get as many people that believe in Democratic Party principles to really work to elect Democratic candidates to office,” said the club’s president, Marjorie Britt.

Britt, a longtime San Fernando resident who is involved in community activities and local government, said the group’s membership totals about 32 people.

Other elected officers include Olga Alarcon, vice president; Belinda Barragan, treasurer, and Beverly Ditomaso, secretary.

The club’s next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Britt’s house in San Fernando. For information, call (818) 365-4839.
