Ex-Big Leaguer Metkovich Is Dead at 73

George Metkovich, who played in the major leagues for more than a decade, died Wednesday at 73 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, his son, David, said Thursday.

Metkovich, known as Catfish in his playing days as an outfielder and first baseman, began his big league career in 1943 with the Boston Red Sox and also played with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates, before ending his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954. He played in two games of the 1946 World Series with Boston.

Metkovich later coached and managed in the minor leagues, and retired after a 30-year career in baseball. He was the manager of the San Diego Padres when they were in the Pacific Coast League.

A memorial service will be held Monday at Harbor Lawn-Mount Olive Mortuary and Memorial Park in Costa Mesa. Metkovich, who lived in Fountain Valley, is survived by his wife, Peggy, and sons George and David, along with four grandchildren.
