NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : One Swing by Smith Enough for Braves

Dwight Smith told Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox he couldn’t play Friday night. Maybe hit a little or run, but nine innings? No way.

He showed Cox his left arm, and the manager took him out of the Braves’ plans until there were two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth of a scoreless tie with Florida.

“That swing didn’t hurt at all,” Smith said of his grand slam on a 3-and-1 pitch from Richie Lewis.

But it hurt the Marlins in a 4-0 loss at Atlanta.

“I don’t know how he did it,” Cox said. “He’s got a huge hematoma. It’s like a baseball.”

Smith strained a ligament in his upper left arm in batting practice Wednesday, and the injury became bruised and filled with blood.

Still, the prospect of having him to pinch hit wasn’t so bad. He is five for 10 with seven RBIs this season as a pinch-hitter.

“I knew the bases were drunk and I hit a fastball pretty good,” he said. “You got to throw my pitch in that situation and I was lucky to get it.”

San Francisco 6, St. Louis 5--Matt Williams homered twice, increasing his league-leading total to 10, and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning at San Francisco.

Glenallen Hill drove in the Giants’ other three runs, and his eighth-inning double drove in Williams to break a 5-5 tie.

Rod Beck (2-1) blew his second save opportunity this month, after being successful in 41 in a row, but he got the final four outs for the Giants for the victory.

New York 5, Philadelphia 1--Rico Brogna hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning for the Mets, who got five tough innings from Bret Saberhagen.

Saberhagen’s arm hurt from the first pitch at Philadelphia. He left the game when the pain became too much and will be examined today.

Eric Gunderson (1-0), who replaced Saberhagen, pitched two innings for the victory.

Cincinnati 2, Colorado 0--Pete Schourek pitched eight strong innings and the Reds won at home to get to .500 for the first time.

They began the season 0-6.

Schourek (1-2) gave up six hits, struck out eight and got help from Jeff Brantley, who pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save.

The runs came in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Reggie Sanders and a run-scoring single by Bret Boone.

Houston 10, Montreal 2--Tony Eusebio hit the first grand slam of his career and Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer for the Astros, who overcame the ejection of pitcher Darryl Kile to win at Houston.

Kile and Manager Terry Collins were ejected in the fourth inning after Kile hit Roberto Kelly with a pitch. Kelly was the first batter for the Expos after Montreal starter Pedro Martinez (3-1) hit Luis Gonzalez with a pitch in the third inning.

Eusebio highlighted a seven-run seventh with his first homer of the season, off Reid Cornelius.

Martinez (3-1) had won eight decisions in a row since July 14.

Dave Veres (1-0) replaced Kile and pitched three innings with three strikeouts.

Pittsburgh 8, San Diego 6--Mark Parent homered and drove in three runs at San Diego for the Pirates, who won their fourth in a row.

Parent had three hits and Mark Johnson hit a two-run homer as Pittsburgh stopped the Padres’ four-game winning streak.
