Five east Ventura County liquor and food stores were caught selling alcohol to a minor during a sting operation, authorities said Saturday.

Employees at Short Stop Market & Deli in Thousand Oaks, Newbury Liquor and Lamppost Pizza in Newbury Park, and Shell Mini-Mart ETD and Tipsy Fox in Moorpark were cited Friday night by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, officials said.

During the sting operation, which began at 5 p.m. Friday and ended at 11 p.m., an 18-year-old sheriff’s cadet tried to buy alcoholic beverages from about 22 businesses, officials said.

Employees at the five businesses that sold the cadet alcohol were cited and released at the scene for selling alcohol to a minor. The businesses could be fined or lose their licenses to sell alcohol for a period of time, authorities said.

The sting operation was scheduled to coincide with the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. The program, funded by a Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control grant, will continue throughout the year.
