ROWLAND HEIGHTS : Emergency Declared, but Pace of Landslide Slows
Los Angeles County supervisors declared a local emergency in Rowland Heights on Tuesday because of a landslide, but a public works spokeswoman said the pace of the sliding has slowed dramatically.
“We’re in good shape today,” said Donna Guyovich, a spokeswoman for the county Department of Public Works.
In the last 24 hours, the hill near Morning Sun Avenue has slid only a “fraction of an inch,” she said. Last weekend the movement was three to four feet a day, Guyovich said.
Still, the Board of Supervisors declared a local emergency. The slide forced evacuation of four homes.
Guyovich said the slide threatened to damage up to 15 homes on Morning Sun Avenue and Shepherd Hills Road.
The local emergency extends to Diamond Bar because a ridge above the houses is in that city.
County crews have been trying to shore up the hill and remove dirt that is putting pressure on it.
