IRVINE: Tireless Volunteer’s Efforts Bring Honor

Homer Guimond was named the 1994 Irvine Senior of the Year by the Irvine Senior Council.

Guimond was praised for his cheerful personality and tireless volunteer activities with community organizations, including his performances with a seniors theater group, the Geriactors.

Ethel Irish Coplen, a member of the Irvine Senior Council, and Derrel Kay, a coordinator of weekly senior events, were both named honorary seniors of the year.

HUNTINGTON BEACH: 250 Are Recognized for Aid They Give

Mayor Victor Leipzig and other city officials were on hand recently to recognize 250 volunteers who have assisted the city’s seniors.

The volunteers help the homebound and participate in a variety of programs at the Seniors’ Outreach Center and the Michael Rodgers Seniors’ Center.

BREA: Travel Program Taking Reservations

The Brea Senior Center is accepting reservations for its “Great Escapes” travel program. This not-for-profit service is designed for seniors and their escorts of any adult age.

Upcoming trips and their prices (per person, double occupancy) include:

* Canadian Rockies, June 4 to 12; $1,495.

* San Francisco, June 5 to 8; $395.

* Alaska cruise, June 26 to July 2; $1,888.

* Western Montana, July 3 to 9; $1,189.

* “Old West Trail,” July 11 to 20 or Aug. 17 to 26; $1,595.

* “California Rail and Sail,” Sept. 27 to Oct. 3; $595.

The senior center travel office is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

SEAL BEACH: Wood Shop Class Offered on Saturdays

A new wood shop class is offered for Leisure World residents from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at Burning Tree Clubhouse 1. The class focuses on safety procedures and the use of band saws, table saws and radial arm saws.

Classes are held continuously so participants can join at any time.

The class is taught by community college instructor Francis Smith.

TUSTIN: ’55 Alive’ Driving Classes Available

A “55 Alive” course for mature drivers is offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the last Monday and Tuesday of each month at the Tustin Area Senior Center.

The class is designed to sharpen driving skills of persons who are 55 and older. The senior center is at 200 S. “C” St. Information: (714) 573-3340.
