DEADLINE TIME: If you aren’t registered to vote but want to have your say on Measure R, the proposed half-cent sales tax hike, circle May 30--next Tuesday--on the calendar. That’s the deadline to register to vote in the June 27 special election. . . . If you’re only 17 now but will be 18 by June 27, you still can register now. . . . Registration forms are available at the registrar of voters’ office, the Department of Motor Vehicles and any city hall clerk’s office.
NO BRIDGE TOO FAR: Only three places will be showing Clint Eastwood’s “The Bridges of Madison County” on June 1--the day before general release: Winterset, Iowa, Hollywood and Fashion Island Newport Beach. Warner Bros. agreed to let Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport premiere it there as a benefit. Hoag sold so many tickets ($35 each, but free popcorn) that it had to get a second theater. . . . Eastwood can’t make it. But he is sending his daughter, Kimberly Eastwood, to represent him.
BEACH PATROL: For years Judy Naimi-Yazdi has been watchdogging litter on the sand at Seal Beach. Her conclusion: Taco Bell produces more beach trash--hot sauce packets, straws and lids--than any other fast-food chain. Taco Bell, however, has decided to become part of the solution. . . . Its Seal Beach store near the beach, after hearing from Naimi-Yazdi, will now give customers such items only on request. . . . It is also adding more outdoor trash containers and will join with Naimi-Yazdi and the Surfrider Foundation for a major beach cleanup June 24.
CHAPMAN CHAMPS: The return of men’s football brought national attention to Chapman University in Orange last fall. But it’s the women who brought home a national championship Sunday. . . . Chapman’s NCAA Division III softball winners--first women’s team champs in its history--will be honored at a campus rally today at 1 p.m. Enthusiastic spokeswoman Ruth Wardwell credits the championship to “teamwork. No Dennis Rodmans here!”
