A 13-year-old boy walking home from a fast-food restaurant was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting that Los Angeles police believe may have been gang-related.

The boy, identified by police as Hector Chagoya, was killed Thursday night as he stood in the center of 11th Avenue in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles.

Detective J.C. Johnson said Chagoya was crossing the street about 10:30 p.m. when a green 1978 Honda turned the corner and stopped in front of the boy. Johnson said three young men were inside the car, two in front and one in the back.

“Something was said from inside the car,” Johnson said.

“The victim turned and the right front passenger shot across the driver with a shotgun.”

The detective said Chagoya, who was wearing clothing identifying him as an 18th Street gang member, died at the scene.
