An unidentified man carjacked the auto of a Westminster resident, released the motorist after forcing him to drive half a mile and then robbed a fast-food restaurant in Fullerton, police said Sunday.

The suspect, who used a handgun, forced his way into a car driven by Trung Nguyen about 5 a.m. as Nguyen was stopped at Fillmore Drive and Grand Avenue, Buena Park Police Lt. James Schoales said.

The suspect was described only as a Latino, about 20 to 30 years old, Schoales said.

The suspect told Nguyen to drive to La Palma and Western avenues, where he ordered Nguyen out of the car. Nguyen was unharmed, Schoales said.

About half an hour later, a gunman fitting the same description in a car like Nguyen’s robbed a Taco Bell at 131 E. Orangethorpe Ave. in Fullerton, Police Lt. Michael Stedman said.

About 20 minutes later, the same suspect attempted another robbery at a Taco Bell at Orangethorpe and Magnolia avenues in Fullerton, Stedman said. The robber left empty-handed after an employee locked himself in the restaurant’s freezer, Stedman said.

A yellow, 1978 Toyota Celica matching the description of Nguyen’s car was later found in downtown Fullerton about 11:15 a.m., Stedman said.
