An Oxnard teen-ager was killed early Sunday when the car he was driving collided head-on with another vehicle on the Rose Avenue overpass of the Ventura Freeway in Oxnard, authorities said.

Manuel Razo, 17, died after suffering multiple injuries to his chest after the car collided with a sport utility vehicle a few minutes after midnight, according to a coroner’s investigator.

The force of the collision caused Razo’s car to explode into flames. He was declared dead at the scene, Oxnard Police Officer Tim Lumas said.

Lumas said firefighters had to cut five people out of the wreckage of the sport vehicle, which was driven by Arturo Mares Sr., 31, of Oxnard. Mares and his son, Arturo Mares Jr., 8, were treated and released from St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

Mares’ wife, Guadalupe, their daughter, Annabelle, and a family friend, Yvonne Koforski of Port Hueneme, were transported to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo.

Guadalupe Mares was in stable condition Sunday at the hospital and Annabelle was released after an overnight stay. Koforski, who is eight months pregnant, was treated and released.

Lumas said an investigation into the crash was continuing.
