SANTA PAULA : Youth Club to Host Reading Program

The Santa Paula Boys & Girls Club is set to start a summer reading program, during which youngsters will read and discuss the writings of Sports Illustrated.

Youngsters enrolled in the program--scheduled to begin June 19 and run through August--will receive the magazine and be assigned articles to read.

Afterward, the group will meet as often as three times a week to discuss the stories, said Diane Koranda, a club spokeswoman.

“The kids will have the opportunity not only to improve their reading skills, but to interact with others and to express their opinions,” she said. “It’s a way for them to build self-esteem.”

The program, which was started last fall at the Santa Paula club, turned out to be so successful that club officials decided to extend it through the summer, she said.

“We expect about 100 kids to participate in the summer program,” she said. “A lot of the kids have showed a great enthusiasm for the program.”

At the end of the summer reading program, the club plans to hold a party and reward the youngsters for their efforts, she said.

To participate, youngsters must be ages 7 to 18 and members of the Boys & Girls Club. For more information, call 525-7910.
