Ducks’ Kariya a Finalist for NHL Rookie Award

The NHL announced Tuesday that Mighty Duck winger Paul Kariya is one of three finalists for the Calder Trophy, presented to the league’s outstanding rookie.

Kariya finished second in scoring among rookies with 39 points on 18 goals and 21 assists in 47 games, and was the lone rookie to lead a team in scoring.

Kariya, a left wing, also led the Ducks in games played, goals, power-play goals and shots. He was the Ducks’ first selection in the 1993 Entry Draft.

Washington goaltender Jim Carey and Quebec center Peter Forsberg are the other finalists. In addition, the NHL also announced finalists for its other major individual awards.

All of the winners will be announced July 6 in Toronto.

The league’s two top scorers, Jaromir Jagr of Pittsburgh and Eric Lindros of Philadelphia, along with goaltender Dominik Hasek of Buffalo, were nominated for the Hart Trophy, which goes to the MVP.

Jagr and Lindros each scored 70 points, Jagr winning the official scoring title because he had three more goals, 32, to 29 for Lindros.

Vezina Trophy: Hasek; Jim Carey, Washington; Ed Belfour, Chicago.

Selke Trophy (defensive forward): Ron Francis, Pittsburgh; Joe Otto, Calgary; Esa Tikkanen, St. Louis.

Lady Byng Trophy (sportsmanship): Francis; Adam Oates, Boston; Alexei Zhamnov, Winnipeg.

Adams Award (coach of the year): Scott Bowman, Detroit; Marc Crawford, Quebec; Terry Murray, Philadelphia.
