NORTH HOLLYWOOD : L.A. OKs Zoning for ‘NoHo’ Arts District
The Los Angeles City Council gave the final green light to the establishment of a commercial arts district in North Hollywood on Wednesday.
The new zoning regulations approved by the council are intended to make it easier for artists to move into empty businesses and create live-in studios.
“It’s making it easier for artists to come in and rehabilitate buildings--something that was more difficult before,” said Ann Marie Roos, a planning aide to Councilman John Ferraro, whose district includes most of the new arts zone.
Ferraro aides say there has been great public support for years in setting up a “NoHo” arts district where artists can live and work in commercial buildings, such as warehouse lofts.
City officials also hope that the new zoning will attract arts-compatible businesses, such as art galleries and coffeehouses.
The boundaries of the district are Cumpston Street on the north, Cahuenga Boulevard on the east, Camarillo Street on the south and Tujunga Avenue on the west.
