Western Tales, Dances on Farm Group Agenda : Members will hold a brief meeting, then enjoy the music of Cletus Bumpus & the Other Guys and the KHAY Country Band.

It’s time again for the 1,600 members of the Ventura County Farm Bureau to get into Western attire for their annual general meeting and dinner dance this Saturday at Seaside Park in Ventura.

Following a quick general election at 6 p.m., the five-member bluegrass band, Cletus Bumpus & the Other Guys, will play through dinner. Robin Finnerty will teach line dances during breaks and the KHAY Country Band will play for dancing at 9 p.m.

At 8 p.m., musical historian Don Edwards will provide songs and stories about cowboys and life in the Old West. “In my shows, I don’t do anything past 1940,” he said.

So expect a walk down a 19th-Century trail and encounters with slaves and black cowboys, Saturday matinee cowboy heroes and even yodelers.

Darlene O’Connell & the Dixie Flyers have put all gigs on hold for the next few weeks until lead singer, O’Connell, takes care of that pesky occupational hazard--nodes on the vocal chords.

Calling all dance-a-holics. June 15 is the advance registration deadline for the first Simi Valley Country Dance Festival, Aug. 4 through 6 at the Simi Valley Senior Adult Center, 3900 Avenida Simi. Cowboy Palace dance instructor Mike Bendavid is bringing together many of the area’s most popular dance teachers, including Sonny Watson & Kris Hagerty, Rick Henderson, Ed & Sally, Tyoni Bush, Kathy Bailey and Sandi Patterson.

A three-day pass is good for all events but no meals. Advance tickets are $35 or $45 at the door; one-day pass for workshops only, $25; dance admission only is $5 for Aug. 4 and $8 for Aug. 5. For details, call (818) 349-8788.

Moorpark-based dance teachers Ed & Sally have moved the location of their popular smoke-free Country Events to Remember classes and dances to New Horizons, 15725 Parthenia St., North Hills. They’re having a get-acquainted dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, with classes from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $5 in advance or $6 at the door. For more information, call 523-1038.

Here’s good news for fans who like more than just new country music. In the last few weeks, KHAY has played such golden oldies as Willie Nelson’s “Blue Skies” and the George Jones tear-jerker classic, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Program director Mark James said the station has heeded listener polls showing that converts to country are ready for more than Billy Ray Cyrus. So the stations has added 350 older cuts to the playlist.
