Volunteers Sought to Work in Forest

Share

Los Padres National Forest rangers are looking for volunteers to spend Saturday cleaning up forest trails in celebration of National Trails Day.

“After this year’s big rains, some of our trails have problems with erosion, runoff and slides,” said John Boggs, a wilderness manager at the Ojai Ranger Station. “The Matilija Canyon Trail, in particular, needs a lot of work because there are so many river crossings. It will be the focus of the Trails Day effort.”

The Forest Service asks that volunteers wear long sleeves and pants, boots and work gloves and bring a lunch, drinking water, sunscreen and toilet paper.

Some tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring picks, rock bars, loppers and brush saws. No experience is necessary, but the Forest Service said the work is very physical.

Each participant must sign a Forest Service volunteer agreement, and children under 18 must have a signed letter of permission from their parents and have adult supervision.

Volunteers should meet at the ranger office on Ojai Avenue at 8 a.m. to car-pool to the trail head. Work will stop at 3:30 p.m. Information: 646-4348.
