Doctors Aren’t Mere Record-Keepers

Share

* It is appalling to witness the lack of fortitude displayed by UCI Medical Center toward the doctors at the UCI Center for Reproductive Health.

The doctors’ reputations should speak for themselves. They have granted thousands of infertile couples their wish of having a baby.

The university is allowing the allegations of one woman, who without [the doctors’] help would not have conceived, attempt to destroy the credibility of these doctors. How quickly we forget miracles.

A university is an institution of higher learning where research is conducted. Without this research, no miracles would be possible.

UCI is destroying the foundation that allows thousands of people the options and benefits of these miracles.

It is ludicrous to assume, as UCI has done, that the keeping of records and the signing of consents is the sole responsibility of the doctors. The doctors are responsible for taking care of the patients. The majority of the monotonous amounts of paperwork is the responsibility of others.

I am a patient of the doctors at the Center for Reproductive Health. I will continue to be their patient.

* Re: “All UCI Medical Research Funding at Risk in Scandal,” (May 28):

It is time, I think, to take a critical look at funding for research. After all, when a single school library has listed on the generic subject “sex” a total of 1,999 subjects and 7,742 entries, and then has this kind of a problem in fertility research/ethics, it seems time to re-evaluate our collective priorities.
