MISSION VIEJO : Church Will Honor Retiring Educator

Share

Mount of Olives Lutheran Church will hold a retirement luncheon Sunday to honor Phyllis Soderberg, director of the church’s preschool for nearly three decades.

Soderberg, 75, has been an educator for more than 50 years, serving as a teacher and principal at various schools before joining Mount of Olives’ Robert H. Lange Preschool in 1967. In her 28-year tenure, about 5,000 students have enrolled in the program, some of them returning as adults to enroll their children.

Soderberg’s efforts helped boost the school’s enrollment to an average of 300 students a year. This year, 250 youngsters are in the program.

After her retirement, Soderberg plans to participate in a Capistrano Unified School District program in which grandparents tutor elementary students.

The luncheon will be at 1 p.m. in the church’s New Creation Center at 24772 Chrisanta Drive. Tickets are $7, with discounts for children. Reservations are advised. Information: (714) 837-2500.
