Horse Freed From Mud After a Fall
Eighteen people, including firefighters, police and lifeguards, slung ropes and dug mud during a frantic, hourlong struggle to free a horse trapped in mud and water in the Upper Newport Bay area, authorities said Sunday.
“The horse’s owner was trying to cross a small wooden bridge when the horse slipped,” Newport Beach Fire Battalion Chief Don Jones said. “The horse fell into a ditch and couldn’t get out. If we had not rescued it, it could have drowned.”
Jones said that owner Robin Prinzing was leading her horse, Sidney, along a trail bridge when the animal slipped.
Rescuers tied ropes around the horse, and while some tugged and others pushed, they freed the animal from the ditch.
The horse suffered minor cuts, Jones said.
