THOUSAND OAKS : Arts Fest to Highlight Cultural Diversity

Share

Dances and foods representing cultures from around the world will fill Conejo Community Park on Sunday when the Thousand Oaks Arts Commission holds its second International Arts Festival.

Each of 10 dance troupes will perform twice during the five-hour festival, which begins at noon.

Although the troupes represent cultures from South America to Eastern Europe, they are all based in Southern California, said Bonnie Roth, chairwoman of the arts commission.

The festival, she said, is designed to highlight the area’s cultural diversity.

“It’s something we decided to pursue because we have such diversity” in Southern California, Roth said. “You’d be surprised what’s here.”

Festival-goers can also sample international foods and browse among crafts made by 25 local artisans.

About 5,000 people attended last year’s festival to watch folk dances from Brazil and Poland.

Sponsors hope to draw a strong enough following to present the festival annually.

Admission is free. For information, call 449-2128.
