PARIS : The Yanks are Back

Share

The 41st Paris Air Show opens in high style Sunday with 1,620 exhibitors from 40 countries, and the talk is likely to be the crisis in the aerospace and defense industries. Even the length of the biennial show has been trimmed, from 11 to 8 days, to save costs.

This gathering of aircraft makers, suppliers and government officials marks the return of the Americans after a high-profile boycott of the 1993 show over high costs and charges of French espionage. This time they are back in the hunt for export markets, and the United States will have 300 exhibitors, more than any other country.

On display, among other aircraft, will be Boeing’s new passenger plane, the B777 twin-engine jet, and the NASA space agency’s experimental reusable X-31 spacecraft.
