DANA POINT : Projects at Sports Fields to Be Weighed

The Planning Commission tonight will consider granting a conditional-use permit for improvements to sports fields at Dana Hills High School.

The $1.1-million project includes new lights and a multipurpose sports field at Street of the Golden Lantern and Acapulco Drive.

The city also proposes to build a concession stand and bleachers, and to upgrade existing baseball fields at the school.

Many residents who live near the school have objected to the improvements, saying that new field lighting will spill over to homes in the neighborhood and that an expansion of the sports facilities will bring more noise, traffic and crime to the area.

Mort August, director of public works, said the city is working to minimize negative effects on the community while providing more recreational opportunities for youth.

Under the plan, the field lights would automatically shut off at 9 p.m., and no adult leagues would be scheduled to use the facilities.

The City Council has already approved a joint-use agreement with the Capistrano Valley Unified School District to upgrade the fields. Under that pact, the school district would use the facilities on weekdays. The city would oversee use of the facilities from 4 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

The hearing will be in council chambers at 33282 Street of the Golden Lantern.
