IRVINE : Solvent in Storm Drain Kept From Reaching Ocean

Share

A hazardous materials unit from the County Fire Department acted quickly Tuesday to keep a cleaning solvent from pouring into the ocean.

An employee of an Irvine whirlpool maker inadvertently flushed the solvent into a storm drain, officials said.

The Fire Department team built a dirt dike in a storm drain at 1922 Barranca Parkway, halting the flow of 150 gallons of the milky-white substance.

The company, Jacuzzi Whirlpool Bath, ordinarily and legally disposes of the solvent by pouring it into a sewer, said Emmy Day, a Fire Department spokeswoman.

The solvent was contained completely and posed no danger to the public, Day said.
