THOUSAND OAKS : Meeting to Discuss Sixth-Grade Classes

Share

Parents of children interested in being part of the first sixth-grade class ever at Los Cerritos Intermediate School in Thousand Oaks have been invited to a meeting Thursday night.

The school, which now serves seventh- and eighth-graders, will begin sixth-grade classes in the fall.

David Holmboe, a counselor at Los Cerritos, said sixth-graders attending a middle school can take advantage of elective classes that elementary schools do not offer. Also, he said the sixth-graders might be more comfortable socially at Los Cerritos.

“Sixth-graders are getting to be very mature, and they seem to have more in common with the seventh- and eighth-graders than they do with the elementary school students,” Holmboe said.

Holmboe said 108 students are already signed up for the sixth grade, which could accept 144 students. Children who live in the Conejo Valley Unified School District are eligible, he said.

Los Cerritos is the second Thousand Oaks intermediate school to begin accepting sixth-graders. Colina Middle School started a sixth grade last fall.

The meeting, which will include information on the curriculum and registration procedures, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria, 2100 Avenida de las Flores, Thousand Oaks. For more information, call the school at 492-3538.
