Oxnard Official Selected Acting President of Ventura College

Larry A. Calderon, a vice president at Oxnard College, was selected Tuesday as acting president of Ventura College by the Board of Trustees of the Ventura County Community College District.

Calderon, 44, a Santa Paula native, replaces Jesus Carreon, who in April announced that he would be leaving the Ventura post to become superintendent and president of Rio Hondo College in Whittier.

The board’s unanimous vote followed a closed session where the board interviewed Calderon, a vice president of instruction, and Ruth M. Hemming, a vice president of administrative services at Ventura College, according to Jerry Pauley, a district associate vice chancellor.

Contacted after the decision, Calderon said that he was looking forward to the new post.

“It’s a dual reaction,” Calderon said. “I am very excited but I also realize that I face a tremendous challenge. I see a lot of work ahead of me.”

Calderon said that he would pursue the permanent position once district officials open the search for a permanent replacement for Carreon sometime within the next two weeks.
