OJAI : Grants Broaden Student Experiences

Share

Ojai sixth-graders will explore Rome and Greece, junior-high students will learn about Nazi atrocities and high-school students will hear 16th-Century English madrigals thanks to grants from the Ojai Education Foundation.

The foundation, which raises money for special projects in the Ojai Unified School District, recently gave $12,676 in grants to 21 teachers out of the 33 who applied, district officials said.

Sixth-grade teacher Patricia Metheny said she will use her grant to buy videos, art, crafts and CD-ROM software to illustrate her students’ study of early civilizations.

Students at Matilija Junior High School will go on a field trip to the Museum of Intolerance in Los Angeles, a request made by teachers Cheryl Widders and Constance Ware.

And Bill Wagner of Nordhoff High School will bring a Renaissance minstrel group to the campus to give juniors and seniors a flavor of culture during Shakespeare’s time.

Each program will feature English madrigals as well as selected comic and dramatic scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, Wagner said.

The foundation raised the money through contributions from the Ojai Rotary Club, the Ojai Rotary Club West and private citizens.
