Powerboat Racing Set for Dana Point

Share

High-speed offshore powerboats will line the South Orange County coast today with the second annual Dana Point Challenge.

Thirty-five boats will reach speeds up to 120 m.p.h. as they race from off the San Clemente Pier to Aliso Pier, a course they should complete 10 times an hour.

Laguna Niguel’s Bruce Penhall will be aboard Ocean Spray as he tries to defend his Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Assn. title. Other competitors include Phil Albright, Dick Simon, Al Cone and Dave Thomas of Huntington Beach.

Racing starts at 1 p.m. with a boat parade at noon. Excellent viewpoints can be found at the Dana Point Harbor parks, Capistrano, Doheny and Salt Creek beaches, as well as from both piers.

Boaters also can enjoy the action, but must stay clear of the course, and wet and dry pits will be accessible to the public.
