2 Children Recovering From Crash That Killed 2 Adults

Two children remained hospitalized Wednesday after a brutal weekend traffic collision in South-Central Los Angeles that killed two people and injured nine.

The accident occurred when a passenger van filled with children returning from a Pico Rivera church event was hit by a second van driven by a drunk driver, police said.

The driver, Daryl DeWayne Mallet, 23, has been charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, said LAPD Detective Alasea Jackson. Mallet was in the hospital section of the Men’s Central Jail with bruises and cuts.

Two girls, ages 4 and 14, were listed in fair condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

The passenger van’s driver, David Venegas, 32, of Los Angeles, father to five of the children, died at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. A family friend, Confessor Mendez, 54, of Los Angeles, died at the scene.
