GOINGS ON : Double the Fun at This Year’s Summer Solstice : The 21st annual Santa Barbara celebration will feature two days of music, food, outrageous costumes and a parade.

If you’re looking for something that epitomizes summer in Santa Barbara, check out the Summer Solstice Celebration this weekend.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the annual event, which is known for outrageous costumes and a parade up State Street. For the first time, the event will last two days.

On Saturday, the “Toys, Contraptions and Thingamajigs” parade will begin at noon at State and Cota streets, and end at Alameda Park, at State and Micheltorena streets. The arrival kicks off the solstice festival, which features music, food and a chance to take a closer look at the costumes and floats. Then beginning at 7 p.m., at the Santa Barbara County Sunken Gardens, the Latin band Teka, blues rock band Uncle Slam and other groups will present an evening concert.

On Sunday, there will be a children’s performance festival at the Sunken Gardens beginning at 2 p.m. Highlights include jugglers, mimes, giant puppets, mask-making workshops and the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Tiny Tots Family Concert.

About 4 p.m. Sunday, the children’s festival concludes with music, dance and theatrical performances at the Sunken Gardens, 1120 Anacapa St.

The Drifters, a 1950s and ‘60s pop group, will perform hits from that era Friday evening at the Solvang Designer Outlets Center. The Bel Aires, a Santa Barbara band, will open.

The program, a benefit for the Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, will also feature a silent auction and a ‘50s costume and dance contest. Photographer Tom Campbell will show footage of Santa Barbara Channel sharks Friday at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The “Underwater Visions” film-lecture is in conjunction with the museum’s exhibit “Sharks--Phantoms of the Santa Barbara Channel.” The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $8 (which will get you into the shark exhibit as well). Culture, a popular trio from Kingston, Jamaica, will headline the ninth annual Reggae Explosion on Sunday at Santa Barbara’s La Casa de la Raza. The group will be joined by Dub Mystic and Santa Barbara ska band Dynamic Pressure.

Musical groups Limit X, Two or More and the Horizon Praise Band, along with country singer Lenny LeBlanc, will appear at the Real Life ’95 Christian music concert Sunday at the Santa Barbara County Bowl.
