ORANGE : Schools Anticipate a Budget Increase

Share

The Orange Unified School District expects to begin its new fiscal year with a budget of $111 million, a 5% increase over 1994-95.

The head of a fiscal oversight committee said the increase is the result of a projected cost-of-living adjustment from the state as well as higher enrollment at district schools.

“With increased enrollment, you need increased teachers,” said Bill Parker, coordinator of the district’s Budget Review Committee.

The district now employs about 1,200 teachers. Any staff additions will be made after personnel officials are certain that enrollment projections are accurate, said Kathy Kessler, director of human resources.

“Until we see the whites of their eyes, so to speak, we won’t be staffing extra teachers,” she said Monday.

The district’s revenue for the fiscal year beginning Saturday is projected to rise from $107 million to $112 million for the 1995-96 school year, according to a budget report. Expenditures will rise from $105 million to $111 million.
