DEBUT: The big names this year at Wimbledon, which got under way Monday, are the same as usual: Agassi, Sampras, Graf and Sanchez-Vicario. But making her first professional appearance at the legendary tournament is Northridge’s Meilen Tu. . . . Tu, 17, didn’t qualify for singles, but will play doubles on Wednesday.

UP FOR GRABS: CSUN has a pretty hot property on its hands. It seems that since the school made it public six weeks ago that it was planning to develop a 63-acre patch known as Devonshire Downs, everybody but Ted Turner has shown interest in buying it. . . . Because of the property’s large acreage, most of the interest comes from developers involved in retail complexes. See Valley Business, Page 3.

TUITION: Christian Lopez, above, had to start working in eighth grade toward his goal of college, and he’s not through yet. Now 18, the San Fernando High senior is headed to UC Berkeley in the fall and will have to keep working to pay for school. . . . Countless other Valley families must find a way to pay the higher price of higher ed--federal financial aid hasn’t matched escalating tuition costs. See Valley Business, Page 10.

POSSIBLE DREAM: Phay Kam also had to struggle through high school . . . but for a much different reason. Kam has muscular dystrophy. Each day, he had to wake up at 5 a.m. so nurses could give him a bath and get him dressed before he was transferred from his bed to a motorized wheelchair (B1). . . . But on Wednesday the 23-year-old Cambodian immigrant will graduate from Monroe High School in North Hills.

RACISM CHARGED: The feud between Westlake Village computer giant Packard Bell and Compaq Computer has taken a nasty turn, with Packard Bell accusing Compaq of racism. . . . Last week, a top Compaq executive said that if Packard Bell lost its president, it would be nothing but “some Mexican factories and four Chinese engineers.” (D1)
