A 31-year-old Santa Clarita man was killed and his friend hospitalized Tuesday afternoon when the man lost control of his car, causing the vehicle to flip several times, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 3:10 p.m. on southbound Red Rover Mine Road, about 300 yards north of Sierra Highway, said Officer Miguel Siordia of the California Highway Patrol. He said the driver, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 1994 Corvette “well in excess of 55 m.p.h.,” when he hit a dip in the road.

“That caused his car to become airborne, and when he landed back on the road he lost control of the vehicle and ran it off to the right into the brush,” Siordia said.

The car rolled several times in the level brush, throwing the driver from the car, which landed on top of him, Siordia said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, Kenneth Hiatt, 31, of Saugus, was trapped in the car for about 40 minutes until firefighters were able to remove him, said Inspector Bob Brandelli of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Hiatt, who was not critically injured, was taken by helicopter to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center.
