CAMARILLO : 73-Cent Increase in Water Rates Weighed

Hoping to encourage water conservation while making up for a Metropolitan Water District rate increase, the Camarillo City Council tonight will consider hiking the city’s water costs for residential users.
The proposed water rate hike amounts to a 3.23% or 73-cent increase for the average residential user, said John Elwell, city director of community services.
“We are recommending this increase to keep pace with an increase [by the Metropolitan Water District] and to continue our city policy which encourages residents to conserve water,” Elwell said.
He said the average residential water customer in the city, who uses about 12 units each month, will see the monthly water bill increase from $22.60 to 23.33.
A unit of water, by city measurements, is considered to be about 748 gallons. MWD officials recently assessed a 19-cent increase for each unit of water, Elwell said.
If approved, the city’s rate increase would take effect Saturday.
The council is scheduled to consider the hike at its 5 p.m. session at City Hall, 601 Carmen Drive.
