The Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross is offering summer classes for youngsters interested in learning how to baby-sit.

Those 11 years and older can take part in sessions that will teach them a wide range of skills, including how to help a choking baby.

Debbie Leahy-Graves, director of health and safety for the local Red Cross chapter, said the classes have been offered for several years and were started in the interest of safety.

“What if something did happen?” while a baby-sitter was minding the children, Leahy-Graves asked. “If you have a choking baby, there are things you can do.”

The class, being taught at the Red Cross office at 600 N. Parkcenter Drive in Santa Ana, costs $35. The price includes a 90-page baby-sitting guide, with materials for 46 different games. Those who complete the course also receive a certificate.

The next class will be in two sessions: July 21 and 28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
