Brett Lewis, Channel 4’s No. 2 sportscaster behind Fred Roggin, has been dropped by the station.

Channel 4 news director Bill Lord said the station was not picking up the option on Lewis’ contract and added that the reason was a confidential personnel matter.

Lewis’ last appearance on Channel 4 was Sunday night. Roggin said he was called in Palm Springs, where he was on vacation, and asked to return to work.

Lewis said the station gave him a 90-day notice, as required, that it was not renewing his contract.

He said he offered to work the remaining 90 days but the station declined.

Lewis, known for his dry wit, had been at Channel 4 since April of 1988, coming from WSVN in Miami.

“It was a great seven-year run, and seven years is pretty good for this business,” he said. “In dog years, that’s 49 years.

“I have nothing bad to say about KNBC or anybody there.”

Lewis said he talked with Roggin on Monday.

“I told Fred I’d love to stay in this market and compete against him,” Lewis said.
