San Gabriel Valley : Prison Board Denies Parole to Rapist
A Covina rapist who recently drew the attention of Gov. Pete Wilson was denied parole Thursday by the state Board of Prison Terms.
Reginald Donald Muldrew, 46, will return to the California Medical Facility at Vacaville for six months of psychiatric treatment, state officials said. Muldrew is a suspect in more than 200 sexual assaults in Los Angeles from 1975 until his arrest in 1978.
He was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for raping eight women and committing six burglaries.
On Tuesday, in a speech to the California District Attorneys Assn. in South Lake Tahoe, Wilson referred to Muldrew as an example of an offender who should not to be released on parole because “the atrocities this animal has committed--and his potential to repeat them . . . strikes fear in every household.”
Last year, Muldrew’s scheduled release to Covina also drew protests. His scheduled parole was stymied when he failed a psychiatric exam. But because of sentencing laws in place when he was convicted, Muldrew will be released in December, regardless of whether he is considered a threat to society.
